We live in a very wooded area, so I have a lot to say about mosquitoes. We have a company come and spray our yard every 3 weeks, but that just isn’t enough for where we live. We needed to figure out how to keep mosquitoes away without bug spray.
I don’t think bug spray is horrible, and I’m sure it works for some, but there had to be better alternatives that we could use. These are a few solutions we have found that work for us.

How To Keep Mosquitoes Away Without Bug Spray
I am going to start with the most recent thing we have used and it might just be the overall winner! My mom told me about this Nu Skin Epoch Baobab Body Butter that can be used to repel mosquitoes. It’s not necessarily marketed for that, but y’all, it works!
My mom and my husband are the type that can get eaten alive when they step outside for 10 minutes. My mom tried this body butter and said she had finally found something that worked, so I knew right away that I wanted Kyle to try it out. He has used it a few times now, while being outside for a while, and he hasn’t gotten bit!
I will now be using this for the kids and myself, even though I’m not one to attract mosquitoes (probably because I’m next to Kyle, lol). The price point is high, and I know it’s a lot easier to spray something than rub lotion on, but sometimes you just have to use what works.
Next up- Thermacell! I bought the Thermacell Patio Shield Mosquito Repeller after reading several reviews. In my opinion, it works great, but works as directed. If you are staying in a general area, this would be perfect to use.
They work within a 15 ft. radius, so something simple like eating dinner outside would be ideal. If your general area is larger than a 15 ft. radius, I would suggest getting two or more to use. You can buy the Thermacell Max Life Mosquito Repellent 48-Hour Refill when needed.
We also received the Thermacell Rechargeable Mosquito Repeller as a gift and I think it works just as well. It goes with the Thermacell Rechargeable Mosquito Repellent 40-Hour Refill. I love having more than one.
A few more things I recommend trying:
- RiptGear Mosquito Patch Stickers – highly recommended for kids (or adults)
- Johnson’s Baby Creamy Oil Lotion with Aloe and Vitamin E – supposed to work wonders
If you do want to use a spray, these are highly recommended:
- Avon Skin-So-Soft Bug Guard – this has been a favorite for a while
- Murphy’s Naturals Lemon Eucalyptus Oil – a top seller on Amazon
Everyone is different, and not all products work the same for each person, but I’m hoping one of these mosquito repellants will work for you! Are there any other products you highly recommend? If so, please leave a comment below!
